A good security system helps keep homes safer and more secure, but also there are some ‘homemade measures’ that you should consider to protect your home and complement the security system so that it can work even better. These ‘homemade measures’ or alternatives are simple and do not require much time or efforts. There are we some general aspects that you are supposed keep in mind at all times remember in order to keep your home safe.

To prevent theft, make smart choices in your daily activities as they can save you more than an alarm; keep in mind that the characteristics are different depending on the type of property and must be adapted according to each house.

1.    You might have heard previously many comments on several occasions by different people regarding safety tips at home and one of them is the importance of always locking the doors and windows carefully if you are out for a little time. Thieves often lurk in your carelessness to find their chance and that same moment you are absent, it is enough for them to deprive you of your valuable belongings. Therefore, before you leave, do not forget to check that you do not leave anything open.

2.    You must make sure not to leave valuables visible through a window from outside, especially in flats or houses on the street. They may be an attraction for the burglars.

3.    You need to make it look like you are at home. Most burglaries occur when you are away from home. A good way to help deter the thieves is to make it appear that there are people in the home.

4.    It is advisable to leave a light on when you leave home for the reason that it not only helps deter the thieves to enter, but in the case of theft, intruders also are much more visible.

5.    Visual signals are always good, but the noises tend to work even better. Leaving a turned on radio or television can help you well.

6.    If you're going to be out for longer time, ask a relative or neighbor to check your mailbox on a regular basis because a full mailbox is a clear sign that the family members are away.


There are many simple preventive steps which you can take into account to ascertain your family’s safety. While the above tips are useful, no doubt, the best protection for you home will be installing a home security system too.
