Uncovering the Story Behind Some Popular Masquerade Masks

Oct 30th 2014 at 3:46 AM

We all know how elegant and graceful Venetian Masquerade Masks look. Most people do not know that these masks are not like those regular masks that you pick from a costume store. These are exquisite and delicate works of art that have an enriching history linked to them. This not only makes them exceptionally unique but also bestows character to the wearer.

Before picking a Venetian Mask for a masquerade party, one should know the story behind the mask they are picking. Some of the most popular Venetian masks are:

The Dama

In Italian, the word ‘Dama’ is used for ‘lady’. The Dama thus symbolizes a woman of greater rank. It is one of the simplest and the most elegant Venetian masks for women. Other names for Dama are Valeri, Salome, Fantasia and Regina. With big, round eyes that slant towards a pointy nose and fuller lips, it represents the face of a beautiful woman. It comes in different elegant variations. Each one of them corresponds to the women of the Cinquecento who used to frost themselves with posh clothing, expensive jewelry and intricate coifs. These days, Dama is considered to be one of the most popular and elegant masquerade masks for women that are worn to masquerade parties.

In old times, the Bauta was used in Venice by the common people to conceal their identities. This particular mask doesn’t have a shape identical to human face. It is flat and square shaped with no mouth and a flat nose. It is also called Larva and Casanova. The name ‘Bauta’ doesn’t really have a proper meaning. There was no particular reason for using the Bauta mask other than hiding the identity of a person so people used to utilize it for various purposes including criminal and romantic encounters.

The Dottor Peste

The Dottor Peste, when translated, means ‘The Doctor Plague’. This mask was worn by the doctors in old times as a measure to protect themselves from plagues while treating the sick ones. It has a strange design that makes it look like an evil bird with glasses that cover the eyes and a long beak like nose. The mask hides the entire visage. It can be paired a long black hooded cloak for an evil look.
