Do you know what’s so wonderful about having a themed birthday party for your kid? It’s that he or she will have fun whether you spend $30,000 or $1,000 on putting together the party. Kids’ themed parties are absolutely fun to have and if you are really creative, you could put together an extremely entertaining party that your kid will enjoy, without having to spend all your life savings. Before you start planning, you have to remember one thing. Your kid just wants to have a great time with friends, enjoy the birthday cake and just get great presents.

So to start off, be sensible with your expectations for the party. The best way to set expectations is to have a conversation with your child. If your child is above two years old, he or she will have some great ideas about what the party should be like. Avoid giving in to any crazy demands; you are still the one who will be paying bills tomorrow and if you get carried away with this one-time only event, you will regret it in the coming days. Any kid will love a theme party. As you are setting expectations, discuss costume ideas, themed entertainment and themed decorations.

Your budget should reflect the reasonable expectations you are trying to set. Even if you have a lot of money to spend, it’s not a good idea to let your young child dictate everything. Kids will always have one part of a party that they enjoy the most. For some, it’s the cake, for others, it’s the costume. So whatever single thing your kid focusses on, put a little more time into it to make it extremely special. While you are at it, let your kid know it’s an either-or situation and that she or he can’t have everything.

You also need to keep your eye on the guest list if you want to control your spending. Ask your child to give you a list of friends he or she wants to invite. Don’t be alarmed if your kid only has five friends to invite. This should actually make you happy because it will show you that they know who their real friends are. It will also give you the opportunity to make the party more special because you will have the same amount of money, but fewer heads to spend it on. By the way, even if you want to save money, think really hard before you decide DIY is the right way. Avoid DIY costumes as they might not come out really great. Besides, you can buy cartoon costumes at a reasonable price and save yourself the headache of making one. Finally, on the day of the party, keep it short because the longer the guests stay over, the more you’ll need to spend on food and drinks.
