Kids’ Socks - More Than a Blend of Colours and Fun

Nov 17th 2014 at 4:47 AM

If you have kids, then you must know that they very quickly outgrow their clothes and shoes—and yes, even their often-overlooked socks. Like all aspects a kid’s wardrobe, socks need to be evaluated and replaced on a regular basis for both outwear and outgrowth.

Choosing the Right Sock Size

The most important consideration when buying socks for kids is the size. Thankfully, sock sizing tends to be more forgiving than other types of clothing (such as shoes). This is why sock sizes are often presented in a range—that is, ‘ages 2 to 3’ instead of a definite number.

However, ill-fitting socks are just as uncomfortable as ill-fitting shoes, so it is very important that parents pay attention to the sizing process. Before you buy kids’ socks, carefully check the age label. If your child has larger or smaller feet than the average for his age, you can base the sock size on his shoe size.

Choosing the Right Type of Socks

After determining what sock size your child needs, your next step is to decide what types of kids’ socks are appropriate for their many activities. You can easily buy high-quality socks online, from basic whites to character themed socks. There are also different cuts, from basic ankle-high socks to knee-high versions. Here’s a partial list of the cuts and styles available:

  • Anklet socks (sometimes called no-show socks)
  • Boot socks
  • Knee-high socks
  • Trouser socks
  • Performance socks
  • Slipper Socks
  • Toe Socks
  • Leggings and tights

Stock up on multiple cuts and styles, as your child will probably need them at some point. If you live in a warmer climates and your child wears shorts year-round, then you may need more anklet socks. When the temperatures drop, be sure your child has enough slipper socks with rubber grippers on the bottom. They are excellent for keeping the toes warm while lounging around at home.

Sock Themes

The best thing about children’s socks is that they seem to come in all imaginable colours and themes. Some of the most popular include:

  • Holiday socks
  • Sports Team socks
  • General sports socks (Basketball, Tennis, Football, etc.)
  • Licensed character socks (Warner Brothers, Disney, etc.)
  • Floral socks
  • Animal socks
  • Argyle socks
  • Science and space socks
  • Music socks

The perfect theme depends on the preferences of the child. Boys who are sports fans might appreciate socks with logos of his favourite teams. Girls who love to play musical instruments might like music note socks. You will find all kinds of printed socks online, so you are sure to find the perfect pairs for your child’s interests and personality.
