Are Ambien Sleeping Pills Unhealthy?

Oct 26th 2015 at 4:02 AM

Insomnia is a common problem but its severity varies from person to person. There are some who find it difficult to sleep occasionally and many others who consistently face difficulty falling or staying asleep through the night. If your sleep difficulties go on for more than one week, it is termed as insomnia, a medical condition of not being able to get to sleep or maintain it through the night time. There are different ways to deal with insomnia, but the quickest way to cope up with this condition is to consume a medicine like ambien.

What is Ambien?

It is a sedative medicine made with zolpidem product. Also called, hypnotic, it is a popular sleep medicine that affects unbalanced chemicals in the brain to cause calmness and sleep through the night. The medicine is clinically proven and has helped thousands of men and women to enjoy a good night’s slumber. When taken correctly as per the doctor’s advice, ambien sleeping pills work quickly to help you achieve relaxation and sleep at the night.

How Do Ambien Sleeping Tablets Work?

Just like other non-benzodiazepine drugs, ambien tablets works by enhancing the effects of a particular neurotransmitter known as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain to cause relaxation and calmness. When relaxation is achieved, it leads to a restful and quick slumber in most men and women. Some people complain that these medicines don’t induce REM-based sleep that is truly restful.  They are also said to be highly addictive, particularly amongst the eldery who tend to trust a doctor's prescription for them without inquiry.

Is Ambien Unhealthy?

Ambien sleeping pills should not be taken for longer than two to three months as they increase the risk of falling asleep while driving. They may become unhealthy when not used correctly. If you continue taking them for longer than instructed by your doctor, they may turn out to be risky enough, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF).

Like other sleeping tablets, ambien can result in side-effects, like grogginess, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, lack of concentration and nausea. Also, these sleeping pills should not be taken with alcohol, nicotine or other sedatives, including herbal supplements. As with most sleep medications, it is a good idea to consult a doctor before considering any sleep aid. Likewise, quitting this sleeping pill should not be done slowly, as it may result in "rebound insomnia" or other problems such as addiction and dependence.

Other Solutions to Deal with Sleep

Other sleep aids include naturopathic remedies may include Chamomille Tea, and Melatonin, a glass of warm milk before bed, warm bath and some simple lifestyle changes.
