The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man. --George Bernard Shaw

Will we have a lost generation?

Every spring I have the chance to work with our new graduates who have entered the workforce.  In particular, I get to sit down with those who have decided to try their hand at starting their own business.  This is due to the fact that they have that entreprenuerial spirit, just can't find a job, or can't sponge off Mom or Dad anymore.

What has shocked me the most is that they managed to earn a high school diploma and never learned the life skills of how our free market works or even basic bookkeeping skills.  Some don't even know how to balance a checkbook!

This is because these subjects are not being taught in our schools anymore.  They are too busy learning "fluff" courses that make you "feel" good, rather than the TRUE history of our country and how a truly free market made it the envy of all who have legally immigrated here.

Since our educational system has failed the last couple of generations, it is now up to us in the business community to take on that task of showing those entering the fray how it is properly done, how much work is actually is, and how there is no free lunch as so many now expect.

You are right. The educational system has failed in teaching students what business is really all about, how to enter the fray, how much work is actually involved and what to realistically expect in the short and long term. It's good to hear that some in the real business community, like you - and I hope more join you, are interested in taking up the challenge of rectifying this situation.
