How Long Should A Dissertation ? | Tips

Dec 11th 2012 at 12:18 AM

"How long does my thesis be?". This question has intrigued many people who are entering a doctoral program. The answer is not simple, since the requirements vary depending on the University and, at times, even within the universities. Sometimes there is no length at all requirements. While the format of your dissertation and intellectual rigor is more important, you will still want to make sure that the length of your work falls within a reasonable limit. Write it too short and your professors can assume that it is incomplete. Write it too long and it can be boring until they finish reading it.

Minimum length

There are no universal on the extension of a thesis rules, since the rules vary within each system of the University or institution. Some universities do not even specify a required length, and if you ask them, reportedly to doctoral students that length should be what is necessary to defend their research adequately dissertation services. In other institutions, these vary in different schools and even departments. For example, the Department of Arts and sciences may require a particular extension, but the school of Pharmacology do not. It is useful to think of your dissertation as your first academic book. Books, are usually numbered by hundreds of pages, not dozens.

Contents

If you face your thesis as your first academic book, remember that just as the books have a specific format, your dissertation must have it. It is expected to include a title, a summary, a properly collated table of contents page, and a bibliography and notes section. Some dissertations are even required to be indexed. Aspects such as the bibliography, notes and an index, if required, added substantially to the total length of the work, without increasing the text. Some institutions that have length requirements do not include these pages as part of the requirements, while others just take the total number of pages. Meet the requirements of your University to fund before terminating and deliver your thesis for approval.
