Effective Ways to Change Behaviour

Oct 4th 2015 at 11:39 PM

Behaviour plays a vital role in everyday life in all sorts of situations. It could be professional or personal. Sometimes, our behaviour comes in the way of our progress and may be the reason for someone else’s discomfort. As social beings, it is therefore imperative to make certain leverage for other people and for oneself at large. There are certain codes of acceptable behaviour that hold relevance especially on the professional front. It is mandatory to abide by the same for larger good and also to constantly keep growing in professional lives. After all, behavioural inconsistency is the last thing that should hassle someone’s chances of that glorious and much awaited promotion.

We suggest some measures that could actually tread you on the path of success by opening a gamut of ways to change your behaviour:

1. Identification: The first and foremost task is to identify whether you need a behaviour change or not. This could be by contemplating upon your existing set of habits that make you unhappy or discontent or even by analysing the treatment of other people around you. Talking could be a good medium and often helps in these circumstances. Do not shy away from getting to the heart of the problem because only after identifying something could you actually work on the remedy.

2. Acceptance: Of course, this is the next logical step to change behaviour. If you become complacent with the current state of affairs you could do little to bring an alteration in positive forms. There is no harm in accepting the problem. It doesn’t make you less of a human being. Instead, it speaks volume about your desire to bring a positive change and this is nothing but a positive trait.

3. Involve a professional: This is subjective and depends on the gravity of the situation and magnitude of result sought. If you feel, you are capable to handle the situation and bring things under control you need not involve a professional. However, in some cases, professional intervention does wonders. Besides, it creates an emotional shield and gives an anchor to fall back on without getting judged.

4. Determination: You need to be determined and focused throughout the process, giving up should not be an option. Good things take time and perseverance is the key to success. Besides, you need to have realistic expectations and not super human goals.

5. Reward Yourself: Well, every small accomplishment in your journey needs to be met with appreciation. It is not only a great motivator but also keeps you focused. It is an effective way to change behaviour. For example-reward yourself with your favourite thing if you took up quitting smoking and did without one for a full week.

While juggling and struggling with changing behaviour, you need to realise that habits and behavioural patterns take time to change because they have literally become a part of you. Shunning a part of your self would not be easy but once you get there, you would definitely have something to be proud of.
