Difference Between PMP Training and CAPM Training and Why Both Certifications Matter

The Project Management Institute (PMI) was founded in 1969, and is credited to provide PMP training curriculum in addition to several other project management certifications. Expanded as Project Management Professional, PMP is amongst the well-known IT credentials, and is consistently ranked amongst the top 5 credentials for IT professionals year-on-year. PMI is also known as the publisher of the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge). This book is regularly updated and its latest editions are published. Apart from PMP, PMI also conducts the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) certification exam. The following information discusses both these credentials.

Project Management Professional

This credential helps current project management professionals portray their skills and knowledge in leading and direction project teams. To sit for the credential exam, a minimum of 4500 hours of project management experience is required. The maintenance requirement is to collect 60 PDUs (professional development units) in 3 years. The PMP credential exam tests a candidate's ability in areas such as project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling, closing, professional and social responsibility.

Certified Associate in Project Management

After CAPM training, candidates can sit for the CAPM certification exam, which requires a minimum of 1500 hours of experience working in a project team or managing projects. The maintenance requirement is to re-take this exam every 5 years. This credential exam tests a candidate's ability in knowledge areas such as a project management framework, lifecycle and organization, processes, integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement.

Difference between these two credential exams

Both credentials are valued and given importance, although PMP is regarded as a higher version given that it requires more experience. The difference in the two exams is the focus. CAPM exam questions are about processes. Examination candidates can expect questions related to input and output of processes and tools involved in process management. In PMP, questions are not high-level, but require answers that should elicit deeper insights of a knowledge area. There could be situation based questions which test the ability of the PMP candidate to apply their knowledge to a real-world problem.
