Pick a Tick - Treatment For Dogs at The West Pymble Vet
During the tick season, when it is warm and humid time of the year, your pet may pick these blood suckers. They are difficult to dislodge and may cause your pet to be seriously ill before you know it. The tick injects neurotoxins while it sucks blood leaving your pet sick. Some of the symptoms that you will find in your pet, and you must look out for are inappetence (lack of appetite), vomiting, regurgitating, voice change - more hoarse, weakness in the legs, inability to climb stairs, slow laboured breathing, or any other sign of illness. These ticks may cause paralysis in your pet and hence the name paralysis tick. Contact your West Pymble vet immediately in case you are not sure if your pet has been infected with by the tick. The vet will conduct a thorough examination on priority and provide immediate care as needed. Your pet will be administered tick anti-toxin via a drip to neutralise the effect of the toxin, however, it does not offer an ongoing immunity.
Your pet will be tick searched and tick rinsed in an insecticidal rinse so that there are no more ticks. Pets suffering with paralysis will need constant care, calm and quiet. Some may loose the ability to blink, or to pass urine and so eye-care and bladder care is given. To keep them hydrated at all times they are kept on IV (Intravenous) fluid. Some of the other conditions pets tend to develop are - pneumonia and breathing difficulties and so IV antibiotics, blood gas analysis, intubations, ventilation may be given. If your pet is seriously ill, so if need, treatment and care can be arranged in emergency hospital. The recovery of your pet may be different, slow and unexpected. You are constantly informed of the progress your pet will make of the treatment, prognosis and cost. Your pet cannot eat or drink water so they are not given any until, your pet feels strong enough. Most of them die despite the appropriate treatment as it depends on the amount of toxin that has been injected into your pet.
Tick treatment for dogs includes a constant tick search using the tick twister or tweezers and then treating the area with an antiseptic. The ticks are prevalent when rain follows period of warmth. They may be caused by walks to parks and areas where there are bandicoots and possums as they are natural hosts of the tick and are causing a rise in tick population. After being poisoned by the tick, your pet may not show any signs at all and may fall sick all of a sudden. There are various products available to prevent and control ticks like the tick collar, along with the chewable tablets Nexgard, or topical products like Advantix, and Frontline top spot applied to the skin.
