Most Common Cat Species in the U.S.

Mar 12th 2015 at 5:01 AM

With their playful nature, soft purring, and ability to control pests and other varmints, cats of all breeds are an incredibly common choice for household pets.Typically, cats are also less demanding than dogs in terms of space, resources, and time, making them an ideal pet for laid-back owners who’d rather not take a walk every day or those who are short on living space. With over 40 different feline breeds to choose from, there seems to be a breed of cat for every job or need.

Many common cat breeds in the U.S. can actually trace their origins to America itself, such as the Maine Coon, the Ragdoll, and the American Shorthair. The Maine Coon is a large cat with distinctive long, shaggy hair that is popular for its ability to catch mice. The Ragdoll cat breed appears similar to Himilayan or Birman cats, with its light-colored fur, dark ears, and light blue eyes. Ragdolls are known for being very calm, quiet, and docile, and their loving and sweet nature makes them a popular choice for pet owners. The American Shorthair came to Americaduring colonization, and was valued for its hard work chasing rodents and other pests off of farms. They are also very docile and dedicated to their families. These three breeds are valued in the U.S. for their pest control as well as their ability to function easily as a family pet.

Exotic cats are rising in popularity in America, with breeds like Persian and Siamese cats becoming more common among cat owners. Regal and sophisticated, Persian cats have long been a top choice for cat lovers because of their long, silky fur. With their easily recognizable large head, small face, and short muzzle and distinctively lazy personality, these felines are often a top choice for cat owners. Another popular exotic cat breed is the Siamese cat. These felines are slim and athletic and are also known to be very vocal. Their distinctive blue eyes, big ears, and light-colored fur make them stand out from other cat breeds.

The most common domestic cats in the U.S. are shorthaired cats that belong to no specific breed. Domestic shorthair cats are also called Tabby cats, as their fur features a pattern of stripes or lines that are often swirled together that are called Tabby markings. Domestic shorthair cats are essentially the mutts of the cat breed world, andmore than 90% of the cat species in the U.S. are domestic shorthairs of mixed ancestry.
