Getting the Most out of Walking Your Dog
A little training goes a long way
Does your dog walk you? Does he try and attack anything on wheels that goes by? No matter how minor or severe the problem, your pup could probably do with a bit of training. Although you can call and ask your local vet for a list of trainers in your area, you can also try training Fido at home.
When walking, your dog should always walk right beside you or slightly behind you. A pup that pulls is trying to dominate, which shouldn’t be allowed. If your canine starts to pull ahead, quickly tug on the leash and confidently tell him no.
Proper socialization can be very helpful in getting your dog to discontinue certain behaviors. Introduce your pup to as many friends, family members, and neighbors as you can. Ask for help exposing your furry friend to bicycles, skateboards, and even cars to desensitize him.
Modify your walk to suit your dog
Not all dogs are created equal, which means walking a Chihuahua and a Labrador should look different. Smaller pups will likely need shorter walks, which also means you may have to walk your furry friend more than once a day. Larger breeds are able to walk for longer. Some may even benefit greatly from going for a jog.
Energetic dogs can be especially troublesome. Even after a walk, your pup may terrorize your home. To help tucker him out, give him a purpose. Next time you take to the trails, put a specially designed backpack on your pet full of water bottles and first aid kit items. The extra weight will help him feel important and it will help tire him out too.
