Gerbils Hate Rough Handling
Gerbils can easily be frightened. So when approaching your pet’s cage, try to make some noise so he will be aware of your presence. Nervous gerbils can nip or bite out of fear.
Gerbils hate rough handling or being held tightly. Their tails can easily break off, so they should not be held by the tail. Kids should also be taught how to handle them correctly to avoid being nipped or bitten by a pet gerbil.
Like most pocket pets, gerbils will learn to tolerate handling when they are exposed to human interaction and handling while still very young. A gerbil should be held in the palm while cupping your hand. Avoid any negative experience when handling your pet for this can lead to wariness around people and handling.
