Why Cloak Affiliate Links

The main reason I prefer to cloak links is because some users are distracted by the link parameters in affiliate links. Affiliate links usually look something like this:
http://www.somewebsite/?urllink=&afftrack=9999999
http://www.somewebsite/?affiliateid=gesites999&sid=48379999

Link cloaking hides those ugly long links that users see in their browser status bar when they hold the mouse over a link.

A Simple Way To Cloak A Link

There are many techniques used to hide these links, some get very technical and complex. Here is a simple way to hide your affiliate tracking code.

Just use the onmousedown= attribute in your link.

Many website designers used the mouseover= window.status,
this no longer works unless your visitor has a very old browser.
Some people use onClick= this will cheat you out of the click through tracking if the visitor uses a right click and open link in a new tab.

onmousedown= works with the left and right mouse button.
Here is the code for your links.

A normal affilliate link:
a href="www.somename.com/?affiliateid=gesites999&sid=48379999"

A cloaked affilliate link:
a href="www.somename.com" onmousedown="this.href='"www.somename.com/?
affiliateid=gesites999&sid=48379999'"

Here is a link to a free online tool that will do the coding for you.
