Ups and Downs of Motorcycles

Mar 8th 2011 at 8:32 AM

If you are looking to purchase a motorcycle, this article is just for you. Let’s take a look at some of the perks as well as a few downsides.

Motorcycles are much more eco-friendly than standard vehicles. They usually consume about half the amount of petroleum that a car uses. They also save a person a significant amount of money when it comes to fueling one up. Many people argue that if more people would use motorcycles as their primary mean of transportation our country would not have to rely so heavily on foreign oil; this makes people who ride motorcycles the leaders in our country when it comes to conservation.

Motorcycles are also easier to maintain. When something tears up on a motorcycle the repairs are easier to complete. And obviously there is less to maintain on a bike than with standard 4-wheel vehicles. Changing the spark plugs, replacing a battery or completing minor repairs on bikes can be simple for the owner. With standard vehicles these repairs are often harder to complete because the parts are harder to get to.

Bikes are much easier to park than other types of vehicles. While some people will spend as much time looking for a parking spot as it took them to get to work, people who ride motorcycles usually have the luxury of squeezing into a parking spot as soon as they arrive. Bikes only take up one-third the amount of space as standard vehicles, meaning a hundred bikes can fit where only thirty cars could fit.

Now let’s look at a couple downsides.

Motorcycles are a headache to have towed. Standard vehicles are much simpler because only the front or the back of the vehicle has to be lifted up to tow it. However, bikes must be winched up onto a trailer.

Even though many people consider bikes to much less boring than traveling in a normal vehicle, they can be disadvantageous when it comes to sporting a date around on the back. Girls are much more at ease and comfortable in a car. When riding on a bike it is hard to have and hear a conversation and even harder to look the same as when the ride first began. Many times windblown hair is just a must-deal-with when riding bikes.

Hi, Travis. Great to connect with another biker here in IM Faceplate. I have a Buell Ulysses (XB12X) and am a daily rider. While motorcycles do present additional challenges to getting from place to place, they also add a sense of involvement that cannot be matched on four wheels. Thanks for sharing insights into the world of bikers with our friends here in IM Faceplate! ~LonnieG
