Stinky SWOM admin and members determined to annoy
SWOM was one of the first social networks to set up an upgrade and affiliate path. I wasn't in SWOM from its inception and decided that the monthly cost was too great, given that the market was pretty well saturated and the likelihood of getting sufficient upgraded members to repay my sub. was low, and the tiny returns I could get from activity wouldn't stack up.
It was very noticeable that many of those who requested a connection were doing so, not because they had any interest in me or the businesses I profiled, but because they wanted to be a 'gold evangelist' and potentially get some cash if I upgraded.
I asked people very politely not to spam me about going gold and said time after time that I intended to remain a free member. It didn't stop. I blocked the worst offenders and put a notice on my profile to state my intentions. It didn't stop. I asked admin to take some action to deter this aggravating tide of 'gold spam'. It still didn't stop.
Today I asked a particular individual yet again NOT to spam me with messages about going gold. He replied with even more spam about it. I complained to SWOM admin again and their advice was just to block the connection with this person.
I totally disagree. SWOM TOS say you cannot spam people with messages to join your opportunity. I don't see ANY difference between that and repeated entreaties to upgrade in SWOM itself.
SWOM has its attractions, but they are not sufficient to make me want to pay out what they are asking every month. So, no thanks. Get it through your thick skulls. I'm not upgrading and I don't want to be nagged about it.
Furthermore I expect SWOM admin to keep to their own rules at the very least. I'm sorry, I can't recommend SWOM any more and have to say up front that upgrading to a gold member is an utter waste of time and money. It has had its day and has been upstaged by other social networks with a more responsible attitude to its members/customers.
There is a lesson in this. If you are contacting people on social networks, behave like you would in the real world. Would you barge up to someone in Starbucks or your favourite bar and ask them point blank to join your business? Of course you wouldn't. Make 'human' contact first. Let them ASK you what you are finding successful, then give them the information and let them digest it before you go back and see if they are interested.
