Smouldering shoulders: One-shoulder dresses are the hottest look of the season

Jun 13th 2015 at 12:13 AM

You heard it right. Wearing those shoulder bares is a sexy trend this season. Whether completely exposed or veiled with transparent netting, the one-shoulder silhouette is an elegant way to flash some flesh. With discreet cut-out styles and glamorous silhouettes, this trend also has a come-hither allure and is one of the perfect ways to show off without going overboard.

Designer Deepika Govind reveals, “From evening wear to a more casual style, the shoulder is getting its moment of shine. Whichever way it’s worn — from one-shoulder peplum tops to one-shoulder tees with shorts — this season the one-shoulder has evolved from being the soft and layered ensemble to a more fitted and hard-hitting glam get-up.” On the other hand, designer duo Hemant and Nandita point out that the one-shoulder trend is a sexy pick for all those who are on the lookout for something coquettish, yet not too revealing.

They say, “Draped one-shoulder jumpsuits, one-shoulder crop tops and blouses in wrap style, fitted or flowy long and short dresses are a few interesting options to don. Since necklines grab a lot of eyeballs these days, you can choose from ruffles, bows, studs, sheer or lace detailings or go overboard with an absolute eye-catcher — a midriff cut-out that plays peek-a-boo on one side.” As slouchy and lightweight belted kimonos were spotted all over the runways this season, designer Pallavi Puri talks about vivid oriental and ancient variants of the same in the one-shoulder get-up. She says, “One could choose from western silhouettes, eastern-influenced styles to ancient Romanian couture. A stylish update of the toga with a string on the shoulder, the one-sleeved kimono, etc. are sexy. Ruffles along the shoulder or fringes will make you look like a Grecian goddess.”

New styling tricks include mixing textures, layering multiple pieces and teaming various shades. So if you think that it could be a tedious job, designer Pallavi Mohan comes to your rescue and suggests, “Choose pastel colours like dusty pink, lime green, powder blue, etc. But if you don’t want to experiment, then nothing like sticking to pure whites. You could also opt for colour blocking in two colours. However, if you have never worn a one-shoulder dress, then it’s advisable to stick to one solid colour to get comfortable with the trend.”

As for the hair and accessories, Mohan adds, “It’s best to tie your hair into a ponytail or messy bun for a casual look and a chic bun or side-swept hair for a formal look. High heels go well with bodycon dresses and red carpet gowns, whereas ballerinas or wedges go well for a day look. Do not wear a neck piece as it takes the attention away from the neckline. But if you really want to wear it, then go for one close to your neck. If it’s a gown, you could pair it with nice statement earrings, ring and bracelet. For a casual look, keep it simple with small earrings and a bracelet if required.”
