Smoking contributes to wrinkling. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin, which then reduces the flow of blood. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are essential for skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastic fibers that give skin its strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions during smoking cause wrinkles around the mouth and eyes (e.g., eyes squinting against the smoke).
