Simple Ways to Increase Your Twitter Followers

Sep 15th 2010 at 5:44 PM

Twitter has become one of the fastest growing social sites on the web.  On average, it will receive more than 20 million unique visitors every month.  With so many people all in one place, it offers Internet home business owners  a huge market to take advantage of.  It includes prospective customers and current customers alike.  The problem is that if no one is following you, not many people will hear what you have to say.  Here is a quick look at some simple tactics that you can you use to increase the amount of Twitter followers that you have.

The most common technique is simply following as many people as possible.  On average, it is estimated that about 35% of the people who you follow, will follow you back.  If you have an interesting profile or a sting of really good tweets, that number grows significantly.  However, it is important to note that if you get a little out of control, your Twitter account will be suspended.  In some cases, it can even get baned.  One of the safest ways to do this is to simply search for people that have similar interests as your business does.  On the other end of the spectrum is asking people to follow you.  Instead of first following them, simply ask everyone you come into contact with to follow you.  By simply adding a phrase like “Follow YourBusiness: @YourBusiness” at the end of blog posts, articles, and even emails, you can attract a large following.  The key is to make sure that this statement is at the end of content that is truly useful and valuable, otherwise they probably won’t follow you.

Another great tactic is to simply utilize word or mouth marketing to gain followers.  If you are constantly tweeting valuable content, your followers will likely share it with their followers.  A few really good pieces of information can do wonders for the amount of Twitter followers you have.  However, this will only work if you have already built up at least a small following.  If you have zero followers, then there will be no one to retweet your content.  Along the same lines, becoming an authority on your subject matter is a great way to get followers.  By sharing valuable information, people will want to know what you have to say.  Once the ball gets rolling, you don’t have to do much to keep it rolling.

Finally, you need to pace yourself otherwise you will get a lot of followers start unfollowing you.  If you only tweet once a month, then people are not going to see any value in following you, no matter good your content is.  On the other hand, if you are tweeting every 10 minutes, your followers will quickly get annoyed and stop following you.  The average recommendation is to tweet between once every few hours to once a day (or every two days), depending on your niche and what type of content you are delivering.  Because there is such a high variance, you will need to do some testing to see what works best for your target market.

There are a lot of books that claim to be cure-all and will teach you how to attract millions of followers.  However, by using these simple tactics, you will be able to consistently increase the number of followers you have, as well as minimize your nofollow rate as well.
