A Pocket Full Of PLR PLR – The Misunderstood Millionaire Maker

PLR products, or Private Label Rights for the uninitiated, are among the most fascinating and misunderstood aspects of internet marketing. According to the common wisdom, one of, if not the single most, crucial keys to successful online marketing is building a well-known and respected personal brand. One of the best ways to do this is to offer a range of one’s own related products in a particular niche. While building a sizable and responsive email list is certainly critical (without one, your whole career as an internet marketer is a nonstarter), being able to promote your own range of products is no less so.

Product creation, however, is expensive, time consuming and often stressful. The time spent researching for an e-book, recording screen capture for a video course or programming a plugin can be put to better use building a list of prospects to sell your products to, or better yet, to serve as affiliates to promote your products. Of course, one can outsource product creation, but the cost is often prohibitive, especially to a novice marketer. Trust me, I know. The guy who introduced me to online marketing also runs a Digital Media agency. When he quoted me a price for a custom twenty page e-book on building backlinks, my jaw dropped. When I asked for the family-and-friends discount, he told me that this was the discount. “Go with PLR,” he said. It was very good advice.

PLR products allow one to have the prestige of having his own range of products without the cost in time or money of actually creating them. Of course, I highly recommend developing one’s own products at some point in one’s career, but in the beginning, most marketers do not have the time, money, or frankly the expertise to create credible products that convert at a high rate. The problem is, most internet marketers have no idea what to do with these goldmines once they have obtained them.

PLR – The Tragedy of Ignorance

It is a well-known fact that online marketers are among the greatest collectors in the world. We have hard-drives full of ebooks, rebrandable software, WordPress plugins and video courses that we bought or obtained resale rights to free, all collecting digital dust. Why is this? Most marketers, especially newbies, have no clue what to do with them.  Meanwhile, they continue to buy plugins, e-books and video courses, blithely unaware that they are BUYING REPURPOSED VERSIONS OF THE SAME STUFF THEY BOUGHT LAST YEAR.

My anonymous mentor (he’s antisocial, y’all, but brilliant) once showed me an external hard drive (500 gigs!) full of PLR he’d acquired over the years. He chuckled when he told me how much time, money and effort he had spent to acquire this stuff, with no ROI. He positively choked with laughter when he showed me what products were exactly the same, with different packaging. I was horrified; I didn’t see what he found so funny (he’s also rather strange – frighteningly smart people often are). Then he told me what the joke was. He’d finally recouped all his money and then some. When I asked how, he said “I read the rights associated with each product – some allow you to change the product around and some claim authorship and some have to be sold as is – found one that let me tinker a bit, changed the graphics and sales copy, and the promotional emails. Then I uploaded the darn thing and listed it on a high traffic affiliate network for sale. Coulda done that two years ago. Sometimes I just ain’t that bright.”

PLR – A Niche Within All Niches

Interestingly enough, PLR is a profitable niche within itself. A Google Search for “PLR” will turn up some 15,100,000 searches.  This means two distinct things; 1) it is highly competitive, so one has to bring her “A” game to compete, and 2) it is highly profitable.  That is why I have chosen it as my particular niche. One can build a pretty good following teaching others what kind of products to look for, where to obtain them, how to use them to build a list, and then to grow an army of affiliates.
