Phil Davis: a stylish Giant among his peers
At first glance, Phil Davis doesn't strike you as an Aussie Rules footy player in the traditional mould - nor, indeed, one of Sydney's most respected footballers.
With his thin, lanky frame and Clark Kent specs, the GWS Giants co-captain resembles more of a bookish, Cristiano Ronaldo look-a-like than a robust AFL defender.
Don't let the looks deceive you. He was one of the Giants' first ever picks when they were setting up the franchise prior to their 2012 AFL inclusion, indicating the 24-year-old packs some serious footy chops.
With the Greater Western Sydney club on the hunt for a maiden finals berth, Davis had been in fine fettle this season before injury cruelled his season in Round 11: an acute ankle sprain against Collingwood forced him out for six to eight weeks. But instead of languishing on the sidelines, the key defender - who moonlights as a Commerce/Law student at the University of Sydney - has been brushing up on his fashion appreciation. A Giant on the field, he's keen to be a style icon off it.
"I must admit, I feel instantly smarter and sharper when I wear a suit," Davis told Executive Style. "I much prefer dressing up - being at a footy club, it's very easy to roll in everyday in tracksuit pants and a hoodie but every time I get to wear a suit, it makes me a little happier."
In this episode of Sporting Style, the Giants stalwart trades his club kit for a couple of new Hugo Boss ensembles at the Sydney flagship store on King Street. Happy to converse on topics from Barack Obama to Ryan Gosling and his serious passion for cricket, Davis demonstrates the smarts to match his sartorial ambitions.
