Perception... What Is Yours?

Perception
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
What one perceives is a result of interplays between past experiences, including one’s culture, and the interpretation of the perceived.

I find it difficult at times to sit down and write articles. Somehow they always end up more like an advertisement rather than an article. Today, as I was writing an email to one of my Safe List Admin, Bev, the thought came to me that what I was writing could very well be turned into an article.

In the email from her she asked me to give her some tips on being successful online.

That got me thinking. She had made a few comments about how she thought that I had been online for years, to be as successful as I am.

WOW !! The TRUTH? I have been online for roughly 1 year!!

Actually about year ago I had NO idea what a link was and how to make it.  So yes... I have come a long way in a year... and I am happy with how things are going... BUT...I have only just begun..
LOVING IT !!

I'm just like most of you. When I first started I had NO idea of how to market, and once again, still have so much to learn... I failed miserably in ALL my efforts. For me, at first I found it extremely hard as I knew NO one. At that stage, I had not heard about Skype. I remember trying to build my first website. I couldn't figure out WHY the images weren't showing up after being uploaded. Having NO ONE to talk to, to be able to ask these questions, I sat there for 2 weeks trying to figure it out!!

Determined?  Yes!!      Mad?  Totally !!    hehehe     BUT I would NOT give in !!

After pulling a lot of my hair out, and finding out that I knew a few more swear words than first thought, I met my first contact on line - Wes Wong - What a life saver he has turned out to be!!  And patient.  I consider myself VERY lucky to have met such a really nice, genuine bloke!!  And patient. Did I mention that? He sat there for hours trying to explain the things that I now do automatically. Thanks mate !!

So... getting back to what I was talking about. Perception.  HOW do you perceive the people and faces that you see on the net every day? When you see a certain face popping up here and there, continually, week after week, they leave an impression in your mind. Now this could be good or bad, depending on how you perceive the situation to be. Are some of these people, what you may consider to be successful? OF course !! Successful people make an impression !!

So I would like to give you some of the tips that I feel helped me in my first steps along this long, exciting road. As you will see they can ALL come under the heading of Perception.

#1    I really think that the AMOUNT of advertising that I was doing helped a lot. I have a large list of safe lists and Traffic Exchanges. FREE is great, especially when first starting out and I would start at one end of the list, send out as many as I could, and start again. Over and over. Fine tuning as I went along, trying different things, seeing what did work and what didn't. Watching what others, that I perceived to be successful, were doing. Never scared to try. Until you have a large list you have to send more than one email out !!People start seeing a lot of your adds around and they start to take notice
~ Perception !!

#2    As much as possible, I had my image on my splash pages - continually branding myself. People get used to seeing your face, if it is week after week, they start feeling as if they know you, as if you have been around for a while.~ "That person is still advertising they must be doing ok" People follow People - They don't follow sites or systems... get your face, image, brand KNOWN
~ Perception !!

#3    Be 'picky' in what you choose to sign up to, do your research because IF you start advertising 'bad', 'cheap'  or 'scam' sites people will remember this!!  Quality is very important. !! It is hard when you first start out as you really DON'T know what is good and what is not. There are SO many different sites popping up every day, that a newbie is OFTEN taken in, used, chewed up and spat out. Leaving the newbie with a perceived opinion. So what has this newbie learned? If you choose quality sites and products people remember, and if you don't, people remember.
~ Perception !!

# 4    As much as possible, make your self available to most people. Yes, this does take up a lot of  time, and every now and then you will find some people who will abuse your time, expecting you to do ALL for them. They wont learn if you do.  This I have learned the hard way and these people become dependent on you, not growing and not learning. So make sure that you are fair on them BUT also fair on your self. I also have found that by trying to help other people that I have learned in the process and I have formed some great and lasting relationships. What have you just done? You have left a lasting impression which is their
~Perception !!

#5   Show an interest in the people that go out of their way to contact you. Spend time to get to know them. Even if it is only a business related email, show interest. ~ Remember - It is not all about you!! The people on the other end are just that - people!! Let them know that you are interested in them and appreciate what they do.  Add a bit of your own personality ~ it's these little things that stick. Reminding them of YOU.
Keep A Smile On The Dial  :-)
~Perception !!

So there you have 5 quick tips that come to mind when I think of HOW people form their  Perception of WHO you are, WHAT you do and WHERE you are heading!!

Perception is HUGE !!  It is what you put  'out there'  that people see.

#    Treat others as you would like them to treat you.
#    Respect them AND yourself.
#    Never go 'out of your way' to hurt others - You do NOT get bigger by putting others down!!
#    Be honest with others AND be honest with yourself. Sometimes this can be the hardest thing to do!!
#    Be confident !! People are drawn to people who have confidence!!
#    Have FUN!! If you enjoy what you do it shows !! Those that like what they do are usually very good at it!! And if they aren't at least they are having fun !! Are YOU???

Remember
No matter what we do in life we can not please everyone. People have their OWN perception of every situation.
Above ALL ~ BE YOU !!

As marketers, I feel sometimes we need to stop and look at what perception we may be feeding to other people with the advertisements we're placing ... very good article!
