Mobility Scooter Buying Guide Part II - Scooter Types

Dec 23rd 2015 at 7:18 PM

Walking around is something that for many is not so easy. Whether due to injury, illness, disease, or age, it is difficult for some people to walk for an extended period of time. To help make it easier to get around, many people invest in a mobility scooter. A mobility scooter is a special type of vehicle that is similar to a wheelchair, but offers a seating and control configuration that is slightly different. There are many types and models of mobility scooters available, so before you jump headfirst into shopping for one, there are several things that you can do to make the process easier.

The first part of this 2 part mobility scooter guide dealt with figuring out your physical scooter requirements and where you will primarily use your scooter. Once you have figured these factors out, it will be easier to determine what type of scooter will best fit your needs.  two wheel balancing scooter are very common and offer a superior turning radius. They are great for indoor use, because they are highly maneuverable. This maneuverability comes at the cost of stability though, so 3-wheeled scooters tend to not be able to support as much weight and will usually not do that well over non-regular surfaces.

4-Wheeled Scooters are much more stable and great for outdoor use. They can support more weight and have much better balance than 3-wheeled scooters. This makes them much better suited to be used outdoors, but they have a larger turning radius, so might not be a good choice for indoor use in tight quarters. Travel Scooters are generally 3-wheeled, but a few 4-wheeled models are available. They are designed to be easily taken apart and transported. Usually the heaviest piece will only be around 25 pounds. They can be easily transported on a plane or placed in the trunk of a car without the need for a vehicle scooter lift. Since they are designed to be lightweight and easily transported, they usually have limited features and have a reduced battery life and travel speed.

Heavy Duty Scooters are very rugged and durable. They are almost exclusively 4-wheeled, but a few 3-wheeled models are available. They can be driven over almost any terrain and offer many upgraded features. These types of scooters also tend to have the highest weight rating with some supporting 500 pounds. These types of  balancing scooters for sale tend to be pretty heavy though and while they can be taken apart into pieces in a manner similar to a travel scooter, the heaviest piece is going to be around a hundred pounds. This means to transport it you will probably need a vehicle scooter lift.

The Travel Scooter and the Heavy Duty Scooter represent the two extremes of scooters. In between there are many 3 and 4 wheeled scooters that can accommodate many different terrains and body types. Once you have a general idea of the type of scooter that will best fit your needs, you can begin shopping around to find the scooter that will be the best fit.
