Internet Explorer's popularity has encouraged many hackers to concentrate their security cracking efforts on IE users. Hackers have focused their time and attention on IE for many years. For instance, in 2006, a group of hackers spread Microsoft malware that exploited the way Internet Explorer processed web pages that used the createTextRange() method. The Microsoft malware was formally announced by hackers on March 22. It wasn't until mid-April that Microsoft created a patch that boosted IE's security against this specific attack.

Similar attacks still exist, but they exploit security flaws in newer versions of IE. Some computer experts and laymen see this as Microsoft's inability to create a functional web browser that can protect its users from malware. The truth, though, is that Microsoft has blazed new paths in computer security that has allowed other browsers to improve their own key security features. The reason that Microsoft malware seems so pervasive is because more hackers focus their attention on IE. This allows them to steal more private information, take over more computers, and display more pop up ads than if they were to focus on Firefox, Chrome, or other browsers that have relatively few users.
