Keep Your HVAC System Working Properly

May 23rd 2015 at 4:35 PM

A good heating and cooling system makes your home stay comfortable all year long, but like any mechanical device, it can be prone to problems. Fortunately, many of the most common issues can be avoided with a little preventative maintenance. Take the time to ensure that your HVAC system does not cause you any problems by using these tips.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

It is a good idea to set up regular maintenance appointments with a reputable HVAC contractor in your area. Give them a call and have them come to your home to make sure that there are no issues with your furnace or air conditioner. If they spot any problems, they can fix them before they become too serious.

For example, have someone take a look at your furnace in the fall, before the weather becomes cool enough that you will need to have it running all the time. Six months later, you can have someone inspect your air conditioner in the spring before the weather heats up.

Change The Filter Regularly

One of the most common problems encountered with HVAC systems is a dirty or clogged filter. These parts filter dust and other small particles out of the air to improve the air quality in your home. However, over time they can get quite clogged and dirty as the dust builds up.

When the filter is too dirty, it restricts the airflow through the system and reduces its efficiency. If your filter is really clogged, the system may not even run at all. Check the filter regularly and replace it if it is getting dirty. At a minimum, you should install a new filter every three months.

Clean Your Air Ducts And Vents

The air ducts and vents in your home can also get quite dirty over time as air moves through them. Even with a filter in place, your HVAC system cannot remove all particles from the air. These can build up inside your ducts and vents and impede the smooth flow of air.

You may be able to clean your vents by hand with a vacuum, but cleaning your air ducts is a bigger job. It is usually best to hire a duct cleaning service to perform this task. They will have the specialized equipment that is needed to give your air ducts a thorough cleaning and make sure that no contaminants are missed.

Adjust Your Temperature Settings

A programmable thermostat lets you run your HVAC system in the most efficient manner. Rather than having to manually adjust the temperature up and down throughout the day, you can enter a program that lets the system take care of these adjustments. This way, you can make sure that you are not wasting energy by heating or cooling an empty home, for example.

With these tips, you can make sure that your HVAC system does not give you any serious trouble. Give them a try to save energy and extend the lifespan of your system.
