Is THIS a blog?
I see it every day. Someone wants me to look at their blog. Ok, I'll have a look. After all, I want people to look at mine as well. So I click the link, and WHAM, I am hit in the face with 5-7 paragraphs of why I should buy your product, or join your program, or take advantage of your service. THIS is NOT a blog. This is an advertisement. This is article marketing.
Let's look at the components that make up a blog. First off, there is an intro, a middle, and an end. Lead in with a great intro that makes the reader want to know more. Give them great value by teaching them something. Give them knowledge, and surely they will want more. Finish strong. By educating, enlightening, and entertaining them, you hold them captive, (if only for a short while), and you leave them wanting more.
What you blog about is important as well. Write about something that you are passionate about. Here's an example; Gary Vaynerchuk was able to turn his families liquor store into a multi million dollar business. He did this by blogging about one of his passions, wine. Perhaps you've heard of Wine Library. Pretty amazing how you can create a multi million dollar business simply by writing about something that you are passionate about.
If you want to write about something, but aren't real knowledgeable about your subject matter, then Google it. Anything that you want to know about anything, can be found on the internet. Just go look for it.
Grammar, spelling, & punctuation, are huge factors in my opinion. If I start reading a blog, and have to re-read a sentence because I don't understand it, chances are I am not going to read much more. Use spell checker, mispelled words in your blog means you don't care enough to double check your work, or are in a big hurry. Slow down, use editing software if you have to. The content of your blog is important, HOW you deliver that content is just as, if not more, important. So take the time to make sure you are delivering something that people want to, and can, read.
One final note. Learning the difference between article marketing, (which is really advertising), and blogging will save you a lot of headaches. Most blog sites do not allow advertising in your blog, and if you get caught you could end up getting kicked of that blog site. So, learn the difference, write about your passion, and deliver content that engages, enlightens, educates, and entertains your reader. Leave them wanting more, and they will come back.
