If I Am Stepping On Your Toes, They Probably Need Stepping On

Most of us here have been around the Internet Marketing block a time or two. As a result, many of us have picked up some rather annoying and unfruitful habits. I am simply going to make a list of things that really DO NOT make me, and I am guessing DO NOT for many of you, want to buy what you are selling any more than if these things were not there. In fact, they tend to send me running for lack of originality.

1. 1. F*ree or any other parcing of the word ‘free’ as an attempt to get my attention. Look at your inbox. How many emails do you see that use this gimmick? I’ll wait a minute for you to check. It’s cool, I’ve got all the time in the world.

Is there quite a few of them? I am guessing there are more than just a few. So, if your inbox is full of this tired trick, what makes you think you are the exception to the rule? No offense, but you are not. Not only does this show a lack of creativity on the sender’s part, but it also shows a lack of concern for you the recipient. Why? If the sender wanted to do more than simply weasel their way into your wallet, they would take the times to not copy and paste their subject line. This actually brings us to number two.

2. An email that has been copied and pasted is almost always an email that has obviously been copied and pasted. You CANNOT copy and paste your way to success. Sure, it might work for a time, but people WILL catch on and eventually you will find yourself with no one who wants anything you have to offer. I know this is trite, but BUILD A RELATIONSHIP FIRST. Honestly, I feel the days of email marketing, for the most part, are nearing their end. This is a social world now and I know when I say this I am not saying anything new. I am simply trying to drill into your heads that you cannot survive in this new marketing world by sending tired emails. To me, noreply@ means, “I really could care less about you. Please give me your money.” The same goes for an email which has at the bottom “If you no longer wish to receive…” I am not advocating spam here. Please do NOT get that idea. In fact, I am advocating something far more controversial: getting to know someone before you try to sell them something. Even more so, I am trying to say you shouldn’t even try to sell someone something. If you are worth your products weight in salt, you will not have to try to sell it. You will be asked for it. This leads us to number three.

 

3. “Hi, my name is [insert random name here]. Thanks for following/friending me. Link.” Really? Think for a second. If someone came up to you on the street, introduced themselves and then said, “Hey, buy this from me,” what would you do? I have a pretty good feeling you wouldn’t be reaching for your wallet. I know what you are thinking right now, “But Bret, I don’t post links that cost anything, so what should it matter?” Good question. What should it matter? Well, honestly, it matters quite a lot. When you claim to value our new friendship and instantly try to send me somewhere be it free or not, I no longer want anything to do with you. It tells me you do not care anything at all about ME, but only about YOU. Now is that how business works? Again, I ask you to think on situations where you have dealt with this. Golden Rule. Simple stuff.

 

4. “To Your Success.” Please, no more ending emails, articles, whatever with that phrase! It has been done to death. When I read that in whatever format it happens to be in, I know whose success it is to and sure is not mine. Be creative! Be a leader and not a follower. I could go on for days about how I despise the use of the word ‘follower’ on Twitter, here on Faceplate, and elsewhere.

I totally dig and respect that you hate me by now. If you do not, then I commend you because you are most likely doing things right or I am not doing my job. Heck, I am a little offended by myself right now, as I have broken these “rules” at times. Anyhow, let’s move on.

 

5. “Take Action,” “Be an Action Taker,” whatever form this particular phrase takes, please do not do it. It is as tired as I am of reading it. Yes, it makes me want to take action. Unfortunately, the action it makes me want to take is not even printable here. Get what I am saying?

I am going to end this here as I am hoping you get my point. I am sorry if I am coming off as a jerk. My intention is actually quite the opposite. It is not even a new intention, as people have been trying to open us up to these realizations for quite some time. I cannot take credit for this article any more than I could take credit for any of the above no-nos. Yes, I am fully aware of my own hypocrisy in this article. As King Solomon once wrote, “There is nothing new under the sun.” However, just because there is nothing new, does not mean you cannot take what has been done and make it original. Be creative! If you are only here to make money and have no intention of using your ability to create, I suggest you go back to your job and save yourself the heartache of never succeeding. Heck, you might succeed by simply doing what everyone else is doing. But then whose success is it really?

You are a Madman but there is indeed "method to your madness"! LOL! Great post. A little cynical but great nonetheless. I still like "free" things even though there are usually some strings attached. Shalom! (I'm not a Jew but I hope i can say that)

Cathy, it is nice to be back online and active. Queen, I wouldn't worry about our friendship seeing as you work a googel more times than I do. And besides, where there is a Queen, there must be a King--or so semantics would seem to dictate. Here is to OUR suc...lol, umm, how about new Kingdom? Yeah, to that. This shots for you! Bret, You still crack me up. Good to see you back online and active. Since I have proclaimed myself the QUEEN of the FREE programs, I fear our friendship might be in jeopardy. You see I have done my homework and there really are FREE programs which pay real money. I hope you will not think less of me for taking advantage of this free money. When I find a penny, I pick it up. I am still hoping for all that good luck which comes with it! To Your Success.....lol....(oooops)

Solare, thank you for your kind words. I pray that my writing helps to build relationships based not on money, but on true LOVE between humankind. These relationships we build mean nothing if we expect something to come from them. I need to learn to make explicit my definition of success and to kill that little part of me that still desires a bit of it. I feel we are at a point in the Creation of humankind where we are to be moving beyond money. LOVE can provide all if we are willing to probe its meaning and realize exactly what LOVE is. Bret, your words are coming from the bottom of my heart. That's why it is so important to create your targeted list, which does not mean to have numbers, but really targeted, interested people who will open YOUR e-mail as they understand that you will bring information to them. Than you do not need any 'what's so general, repetitive subject line' neither any other well known disclosure, neither another f*r*e*e* product to attract your reader. When I am looking at my email account and what's coming in there --- I cannot quote 5 people who are really building relationship throughout their emails. So, when someone is able to be different and targeted he in the end surely can say: the money is in the list. :)
