How Sejanus His Fall Became Sejanus Ben Johnson?

Nov 19th 2015 at 9:16 PM

Playwriting is an art that only a few writers possess. Also there are only a few plays that are remembered for long time or you can say that the plays are read again and again.

Sejanus Ben Johnson is a play written by noted playwright Ben Jonson in 1603. Sejanus His Fall is the real name of the play but it is known by the name of the author for an interesting reason. It is a great tragedy play about Lucius Aelius Seianus, who was a confidant of the Roman Emperor. This ambitious soldier is the protagonist of the play.

The play was performed at the king’s court the same year it was launched. And the play got wide applause even from critics. Then something happened that changed the view of the king and the gentry. Ben Jonson was tried for sedition and waging a war against the king for this play. It was miscommunication for which the writer was pardoned. Soon after his release, the writer changed the play.

Few people know that there was a co-author with Ben Jonson. This co-author, which Jonson didn’t want to name, brought some changes and additions to the original play. Unaware of the impacts the changes could bring to the play, the co-author went ahead and changed the play. The changed version was said to be an act of treachery and Jonson was called a king’s court to give explanations. Jonson was freed and after freeing from the charges, he changed the original play to Sejanus Ben Johnson.

The changes were removed and the original version of the play was re-launched first in 1605 in quarto and then in 1616 in folio. It is the how the play came to know by the name of its author. It was in 1604 a year later the play was launched that the writer was charged for sedition.

It is a serious play about and ambitious and courageous soldier and his confidant the king. It makes a good read and it is still read today. If you want to read the play, the original version, as Ben Jonson had removed the changes then you can search Sejanus Ben Johnson on Google and find a free reading library.
