High Power Laser Pointer Blue can cause flash blindness
A helicopter used by the sheriff’s office was struck by a Green 1mW Laser Pointer pen on Sept. 18 and 26 in Antioch and Nov. 1 in Pittsburg, sheriff’s officials said today. The three separate incidents all resulted in an arrest of individuals.Sheriff’s officials did not provide these suspects’ identities. In each case, the suspects were pinpointed using the helicopter’s infrared and mapping technology, sheriff’s officials said. Local police then responded to the locations and arrested the suspects.
Discharging a Laser Sights for Handguns at an aircraft is considered a federal crime, sheriff’s officials said. It can result in up to three years in prison or a $2,000 fine for offenders.Sheriff’s officials said it creates a dangerous situation for pilots, who can become disoriented and lose their night vision for several minutes after being struck by a laser.
“Discharging a Laser 50000mw at an aircraft not only poses a danger to the those onboard the helicopter, but also those on the ground,” Lt. Jose Beltran of the sheriff’s office’s air support unit said in a statement.
Laser pointers at one time were primarily used for presentation purposes in boardrooms and classrooms, they are now wildly available at trinket shops, flea markets, retailers and on the Internet, and are much more powerful. According to the FDA, laser pointers can be momentarily hazardous when staring directly at the beam. For pilots, these Laser Pointer Blue 30000mw can cause flash blindness, a temporary or permanent loss of vision when the light-sensitive parts of the eye are exposed to an intensity of light they are not physically meant to handle.
In addition, research suggests green lasers are more dangerous to the eye than red lasers because the light spectrum is more easily absorbed by the retina and more susceptible to damage. In fact, green lasers are considered to be more than double the strength of other colored lasers and can travel for miles, according to many media reports and health and aviation experts.
Schumer there are certain types of lasers for which manufacturers must obtain FDA permission before they can be sold in the U.S., and green lasers should be included in that category so they are only sold to professionals, rather than would-be pranksters.
