FreddieGray and the Riots in Baltimore

May 7th 2015 at 11:07 PM

The news of the death of Freddie Gray’s death in police custody was not anyone wanted to hear and it almost immediately sparked riots in Baltimore with protesters taking to the streets and defying all laws to register their displeasure about the incident. It is not the first time an African American is meeting untimely death in the hands of law enforcement agents and activists and protesters alike have raised their voices against such acts and have used several media to make this known to the public with the internet being a major channel.

Gray’s death came due to the injuries sustained while he was being transported from the point of arrest to the police station. His death was subsequently rules as a homicide with the six officers involved charged with second-degree murder and other related offences. This however did not stop the people of Baltimore from making their feelings known as it did not take long after the death of the 25-year old Gray was announced before people staged peaceful protests.

The protests became one of the most violent ones in the country with not too many Baltimore riots recording such violence and anarchy experienced in this one. Not less than twenty police officers have since been injured after the death of Gray and the continued violence led to the declaration of a state of emergency. Businesses and individuals were victims of Baltimore Risings with the McDonald’s restaurant being a notable victim after its windows were broken on the 25th of April, 2015 as fallout of the riots.

The protests and violence as regards the death of Freddie Gray have continued to spread and increase with violent actions relating to the incident being recorded in some other areas especially in and around Baltimore.

While protesters and activists have taken to the street to make their feelings known, online activists have also used the internet to spread the word about the unjust killing of an African American and especially as this is not the first of such cases. Twitter, Facebook, Nterestin, and other such social media platforms have been used by online activists and the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter has become increasingly popular no thanks to the increase in the number of police killings of black people in the United States of America. It is rather unfortunate that the #FreddieGray hashtag has also been added to the sorry list of black deaths due to the negligent act of police officers in the United States of America. If you want to have a real discussion about your thoughts and feelings on this topic please do so here, Nterestin allows for you to have that chat with your family, friends, and even strangers.  Let’s open the conversation for change.
