Dreams without an Action

Jul 3rd 2010 at 12:58 AM

Quite a few talented musicians have came into my studio.  A select few have recorded some really good music.  1 has walked in with a success strategy and a plan to move towards the dream of actually earning a living through their music.

Most say make a good record and get signed by a record label.  They learn quickly, this too requires a plan.

Here is another nasty word.  Expectations.  If there is more than one in your band, it would be good to have a discussion about what each members' plan and expectation of the bands' success and the other members' success.

You will be truly amazed at the answers.

The music business, like any other business can be a very expensive hobby.  It is also one of the hardest to earn a living at.  Success rate less than 1%.

I am 47 years old. I have been around music all my life.  Like sports or any other business that requires the team to move together as one unit has a huge failure rate.

There are however steps you can take with your music to make money that most don't ever think about.  The first step is to own the rights to it.  There are two main types of rights.  Artist and Publisher.  To own these rights give you control of your music.  You make the decisions.  You will not ever collect any royalties for you music until you own these rights.  Most major record labels take the publisher rights or a portion for a fee.  If you don't know what you are doing, they will take all the publisher rights and half of the artist rights by offering some upfront cash deal.

This is just one of 48 things you need to know to become a professional musician in todays world.  I offer a complete package of services at Traina Studios that will guide you towards your dream if your dream is a career in music.

Knowledge however without action is like dreams without action.  Nothing moves forward without an action.  I wrote an article about a year ago now on one of my blogs called "One Thing".

My point was to decide and accomplish at least one thing every day to move your life towards your dream.  Keep a checklist and 365 days from today, look at the list of accomplishments.  No one I have met yet has done this.

What are you going to do today that makes a difference?  What do you want to do today?  What is stopping you.  Do it.  Excuses are for dreamers without a plan.

Have a great weekend.  If you want to move forward with your music, check out our main web site.

Trivia question:  What is the first thing you need to record you music?

answer:  a microphone, i have em.  Lay your tracks at Traina Studios.  Where the most important tool in a musician toolbox is the song.
