Do I Need a Website to Be a Successful Affiliate Marketer?

Sep 10th 2010 at 12:50 PM

Whether you need a website or not to be a successful affiliate marketer is a very common question I get. The answer is yes and no.

I know not what you wanted to hear. It really depends on how serious you are about your business.

I say no because you can get started using free resources but you will need a web presence. This can be a blogger blog, a Squidoo Lens or similar free site.

Blogger is probably the best to use because it is the most flexible. I know people who just use free sites and can make a nice living. There is a risk though.

Blogger and the other free sites can and do delete sites and you have no recourse. Blogger is probably the most forgiving but if you are building a long term business you really need to have more control of your business.

If money is a problem this is a great way to start but as soon as you start making money you will want to get your own domain/s and hosting.

Having your own domain and web presence is always the best way. There are a lot of things that you can do with your own hosting that you can't do with the free options.

The most important thing is that it will not disappear as long as you pay your hosting.

It is easy to install a WordPress blog onto your site. It is flexible enough with the various plugins and themes available to be any type of site you may need.

So you do not have to have a website of your own but it is recommended. Either way you will need to have a web presence to be an effective affiliate marketer.

I find that if you are marketing a particulay product or service you may want to get a domain name with that product or service in the domain name. Maybe you have a business that caters to moms working from home. You might want to get a domain name like www.momsworkfromhome.us or athomemoms.com,org, net, us, or whatever is available. I find that most .coms are taken along with most .org and .net. I have found that the .us gets fairley good rankings in a Google search and I use the .bz or .biz for business. You can also put a dash (-) between the words in the domain name and see if you name is available as a .com. Google and Yahoo see the dash(-) as a space between the words and will rank your site as good as a .com without the dash. The only problem is if you are marketing face to face and telling people your domain name. People will leave out the dash a lot of times and find your competition. I hope this helps.

Great info as always Mike. There are so many free resources around to guide someone through getting hosting and wordpress set up. For those who don't have hosting, I just posted an article on a great way to give the impression you have your own hosting even if you don't. Shows you an easy way to personalize vanilla affiliate pages and make them really stand out.
