Flu or cold? Differences and how to treat them

With cold and weather changes, respiratory diseases appear. The arrival of winter contributes to the proliferation of these diseases since the cold causes a decrease in the defensive capacity of the mucous membranes of the upper airways. And, because they arrive at the same time of the year and have some symptoms in common, the flu and the common cold are often confused. However, both circumstances are dissimilar in strength and risk of problems, so it is significant to know how we can tell the difference between them. These are two similar terms by meaning.

Differences And Similarities Between Flu And Cold

Germs root both, but they are of a dissimilar kind. The origin of the flu is the Influenza, mainly of the H1N1 type. However, it has the peculiarity of changing from time to time, which causes its symptoms to be different and more or less noticeable depending on the modification they present. The ones that cause the cold are usually the rhinovirus and the coronavirus. Also, it is more common and can be suffered several times a year.

Here is the difference between similar terms

The most visible difference between similar terms and both diseases is the intensity of the symptoms. Unlike the cold, the flu is greatly more strong and devastating and can cause a soaring fever for three days or more. Another variation is that the flu emerges suddenly, and its symptoms can end a week or two. On the opposing, the cold appears slowly and has a shorter duration.

Common symptoms are nasal congestion, sneezing, mucus, cough, sore throat and headache, and loss of appetite. The cold hardly causes a fever, or if it is extremely low, it causes common depression and exhaustion. In the flu, the fever is temperate or high, and the uneasiness goes a little more, causing moderate or harsh muscle pain, chills, and tiredness.

The basic treatment of both diseases is very similar. However, if there are complications or high fever occurs for many days, it is necessary to see a doctor to assess the condition.

• Analgesics and anti-thermal agents, such as acetaminophen, to relieve pain, discomfort, and fever.

• Medicines to improve catarrhal symptoms, such as cough suppressants or decongestants.

• Abundant fluids and, if necessary, an expectorant to help eliminate mucus.

• Break.

• It is important to keep in mind that it is not useful to take an antibiotic since, being diseases caused by viruses, this type of medicine can do nothing.
