Cross Border Multi Language Internet Marketing

Dear IM Faceplate Members:

While its true that English is the lingua franca of internet commerce and will be for a long time to come I suspect that new and somewhat less competitive doors may be opening up in emerging markets where English is the second (at best) language.

Living in Japan for so long I am acutely aware of the different customs, thinking patterns and attitudes toward risk that prevail here.

Glass have empty or half full it is clear that there are lots of opportunities for marketing as evidenced by the tremendous rise in tweets and of course the rapid adoption of the iphone here in Japan.

The question becomes how to reach the Japanese in their own language within their cultural comfort zone.

I guess it boils down to some form of intelligent localization plus the willingness to build an e/m autoresponder inventory in Japanese.

It might not be worth it for Japan alone but if we add in China it might notwithstanding Chinese aversion to pay for information.

And of course there are plenty of opportunities to localize even in countries like Germany where many people speak and write English.

Just wondering what you think of the possibilities? Pie in the Sky or worth exploring?

Best wishes,
