Common Factors Influencing Conveyor Belts Operation

Aug 28th 2013 at 5:28 AM

About 95 percent of the transport mechanisms in mining operations are handled by the conveyor belts. These simple but important components can change the shape of the materials conveyed, in greatly reducing downtime and significantly increasing efficiency. But like all functional components, factors that influence how well they work.

Charging stand: This is one of the most important factors as conveyors have to carry tons of material smoothly. As belts are loaded on loafer’s valley, there is a possibility of being forced over gaps of the idle connection. When this happens, there is an increased risk of premature failure and the entire transport system can be compromised.

One way to minimize this is to ensure that the heaviest loads must travel on the straps with a smaller radius bending. This binding bridges and reduces the risk of machine failure. The straps must be designed with a greater flex life so as to suit different angles without being forced into the attachment holes.

Impact Assessment: The materials transported in mining operations are abrasive and heavy. As such, the belts must be able to withstand the two factors. One way to ensure you do not suffer premature failure is to opt for a belt that has a maximum operating voltage than necessary. This drives up the cost of equipment, but is less expensive than suffer impacts is not designed to handle.

Cross Flexibility: Belts must be rigid but flexible enough to be in contact with the tracks at all times. If this is not the case, there is a very high risk of having the belt change and causing damage to the entire system. There is also a higher probability of having the belt derail although this is not a very common occurrence.

Belt type of material: The conveyors are made of various materials, the most common of which are, urethane rubber and PVC. A consultation between engineers and manufacturers decide which type to use. Features such as flame retardancy - although most of the belts are burned at high temperatures – must be noted as well, in addition to fire detection and suppression equipment used in mining operations.
