Campaigning Intensifies By Washington Heights Congressman As Primary Voting Come Nearer

Dec 9th 2015 at 4:29 AM

Presidential primaries of the Democratic Party in United States for the year 2016 are scheduled to be held shortly. As the date is closing up, the campaigning of candidates to attract the voters is growing in intensity. At the end of it the primaries would help determination of the Presidential candidate of Democratic Party for the 2016 elections. The reigning President Barrack Obama is ineligible for re-election owing to the term limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment and that is why the primaries including the 13 NY democratic primary vote have assumed major significance.

Trend of Primaries in New York State

Usually the results of the primaries have been more liberal in the state of New York and the 13 NY Democratic Primary Vote is no exception to this common rule. In recent times the state has experienced solid majority of democratic voters. A big part of these voters are in the city itself. Other areas in the State having clear democratic majorities are Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Rochester. The rural parts have some concentration of Republican voters. Despite the clear democratic tilt the voters have sometimes supported the centric Republicans in the voting.

Large Number of Parties and Candidates

New York State allows cross endorsement system and therefore has a large number of political parties as well as candidates. For instance; there are many candidates for the 2016 primaries for the 13 NY district that would be electing the successor to the reigning leader Charles Rangel. Candidates for the 13th NY district include Suzan Johnson Cook, Adriano Espilat, Bill Perkins, Adam Clayton Powell, Mike Gallagher, Keith Wright, Martin Chicon, and Clyde Williams in the quest for becoming the Washington Heights Congressman. Also important is the endorsement of major party candidates by the smaller parties.

Features of Primaries

Primaries or primary elections are those where the enrolled members of any party would nominate the candidates for general election. In addition; they would also elect the party officers. Since the primaries in New York are closed only the members who have been enrolled in the party can vote in the primaries. Usually an election district for the primaries would have a maximum of 950 registered voters. However, when redistricting is effected the number could be enhanced to as much as 1150. Boundaries of the district are determined by a local board.

How the Primaries Work
It is necessary that the person nominated should get at least 40% of votes or else there would be runoff primaries taking into consideration only the top two designate. Thus the process of choosing someone such as Clyde Williams for Congress is bit complex. It is the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party that nominates the persons for public offices throughout the state but people who receive at least 25% votes in the committee can contest in the primaries.

It remains to be seen who is going to replace the Washington Heights Congressman Charles Rangel. Leaders in the race seems to be Mike Gallagher and Clyde Williams for congress though a few others are not that far behind. Upcoming primaries will answer the question conclusively.
