Athletes May Need More Dental Check-Ups than Others

Nov 10th 2014 at 2:50 AM

An article entitled “Exercise May Lead to Higher Risk of Tooth Decay” published at DenistryToday.com today told of researchers at the University Hospital in Germany assuming that the more exercise you do, the higher risk there is of tooth decay and early teeth loss. A group of 70 people, some athletes, some not, were monitored and the result showed a correlation between exercise and tooth decay. The risk of tooth decay went up for every extra hour of training. One explanation is that exercising raises the alkali content of saliva, creating a better environment for harmful bacteria to grow.

Despite the research findings, good oral hygiene will keep your gums healthy and fight tooth decay. Since there were only 70 participants in the study, it is not valid to generalize these finding to the entire world. At the end of the article, there was a more likely reason stated. The high consumption of sugary energy and sports drinks by athletes may be the cause of the more rapid tooth decay. This research is also not a good reason leave off daily exercise.

Brushing two times a day for two minutes is the best recommendation for fighting many health conditions. An article at MedicalNewsToday.com by David McNamee cited research that connects poor dental hygiene to Alzheimer’s disease, pancreatic cancer, and heart disease. Bacteria associated with gum disease travel through the roots of teeth up the nervous system, then into the brain, and through the blood stream to settle in other parts of the body. The bacteria associated to heart disease actually surround themselves with blood platelets to protect themselves from immune cells and antibiotic, and form clumps in the bloodstream. Many of these associations between dental hygiene and serious health problems are still under investigation but good dental hygiene is still the best precaution.
