Artist, crafter or ARTISAN!

Dec 13th 2011 at 6:11 PM

This is a dilemma for a lot of creative people and one which has a lot of grey fuzzy areas.

For some the word artist signifies paintings, usually hung on a wall.

Crafter has a more homely feel, but there is the problem .......does homely mean 2nd rate?? I am constantly asking why the distinction ? The answers have been varied and enlightening in some cases.  For example heres a few  :-

1. Artists are full time professionals and crafters do it for fun....wrong! A lot of artists are technically part- time and engage in different work related activities...they have to eat!!

2. Crafters are the arty farty bunch who think they are artists. Wow, now thats an opening for a full scale above, they like to eat too.

3. Artists work with paint and crafters work with other materials..wrong again!

4. Crafters see their stuff as a social thing..really? Its difficult to be sociable when concentrating in many cases.

And now we get to that magic word ARTISAN.

Someone skilled in their chosen field of creativity, usually practical / visual arts.

As a textile designer I dont class myself as a knitter,  quilter,  embroidery,  lace maker, crocheter, colourist or painter  because I use all these skills in my work. The creation of visually appealing works requires many skills.

Hope this made you think outside the box.
