An Overview of the Different Dinners Sets Available Online

Apr 8th 2015 at 10:25 PM

When it comes to dinner sets, there can be a number of ways in classifying these. It can be based on the number of pieces such as 12-piece or 16-piece set. These may also be classified depending on the design, with descriptions that relate to the style, shape, and even the patterns. It can also be called a formal dinner set or a casual dinner set.

But the most common method of classification and perhaps the most important consideration when making a purchase would be in the type of material used. With so many different kinds of materials used for dinner sets, it becomes only proper to make this as a strong basis for classifying the different dinner sets.

Dinner sets based on the materials used would be the following:

Earthenware

Dinner sets classified as earthenware are those made from unrefined clay, which is shaped by fired in an oven at a low temperature. Earthenware offers a natural look to the dinner set but this can also be prone to scratches and stains, particularly if not glazed.

Stoneware

Similar to earthenware, stoneware dinner sets are also made from clay but this is of the more refined type. Unlike the earthenware sets, the clay here is subjected to heats of high temperature, making these less permeable.

Porcelain

Probably more known as fine china, porcelain dinner sets are also made of clay of the white variety and fired in a kiln at a high temperature. This process makes it possible for a stronger surface, much like that of glass.

Bone China

Dinner sets classified as bone china are similar to porcelain but with the addition of bone ash, which allows these to have that transparent and white color. Delicate they may appear, bone china sets are really very strong and durable. It may be noted that most fine or formal dinnerware sets are made from bone china.

Glass

A very common type of dinner sets are those made of glass. Advantages of glass include having a variety of designs and colors. Though not hard to clean, care must be given since glass can easily break. Glass dinner sets can also be exposed to high temperatures.

Melamine

Dinner sets made of melamine are among the more commonly used today, especially for casual dining. Melamine is actually a chemical name that is the main ingredient of this plastic dinnerware. Melamine sets are nonporous and non-absorbent and can be resistant to chipping and breakage.
