ACT Public Holidays 2016
ACT Labor's decision to supply Canberrans a whole new public holiday "smacks of populism" along with the government should alleviate another day off rather than, in accordance with the nation's peak hospitality advocate.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr announced over the ACT Labor conference that Easter Sunday would get to be the 14th public visit to the ACT pick up, hailing it a win for workers.
But Australian Hotels Association leader Stephen Ferguson said the choice was another financial challenge to businesses, adding about $20 an hour or so to an average hospitality worker's wages.
"People taking care of this day were already earning Sunday rates, this ways fewer businesses will probably be open and much less people are capable of earn money," he was quoted saying.
"If we can make Easter dates 2016 Sunday a public holiday, let's quickly look at depriving them of Family and Community Day?"
Mr Barr also used his speech to guard the weekend penalty rates system.
"We need to have a clear work/life balance to protect work-time with our families and friends, and a clear recognition in the cost of corresponding outside the traditional, Monday to Friday working week," he explained.
"This is victory for all the hard working emergency services personnel, retail and hospitality workers that work well on Easter Sunday as opposed to spending it because of their friends and family."
Canberra Business Chamber leader Robyn Hendry said the additional public holiday wouldn't normally impact on the functional week, being bookended by Good Friday and Easter Monday, but was included with costs.
"Broadly speaking we aren't looking for more public holidays, but we might recognise Easter is one kind of those times that's special," she said.
"This won't stop people travelling at Easter, it's going to just erode the gain for the tourism operator."
There were 13 scheduled in the ACT school holidays this season, with Family and Community Day another on September 28. The extra day can certainly make 14 in 2016, much like NSW and Victoria, who in addition have an Easter Sunday public holiday. The number will vary slightly in different year on account of dates landing on different days in the week.
Ms Hendry said the business enterprise community's necessitates lower penalty rates on ordinary Sundays, where restaurant and cafe workers were generally paid double their base rate, were unrelated on the one-off Easter day.
