A guide to the new Magento updates

Nov 19th 2014 at 2:09 AM

Earlier this week, eBay Enterprise released the latest updates of both the Magento Enterprise Edition (1.14.1) and Magento Community Edition (1.9.1).  The new updates provide Magento users with a wide range of new features and benefits that will improve the overall performance and security of their ecommerce websites. Here we will take you through some of the key features and how they will benefit you.

The new Magento features allow merchants to deliver a better online shopping experience to their customers.

Makes managing product categories easier

The latest Magento Enterprise Edition update aims to make it easier for ecommerce storeowners to manage their product categories. One of the ways it does this is with its new drag-and-drop visual merchandising tool. This tool allows merchants to preview the products displayed on their category pages, with a click of the mouse and make changes accordingly.

The new update also allows Enterprise Edition merchants to create new categories by cloning existing ones and set up rules to automatically fetch products from other categories.

They are also given the opportunity to fix ‘hero products’ at the top of each page or program Magento to automatically show products with special pricing at the top of their category pages.

Thanks to the new enhancements it is easier than ever before for merchants to optimise their category pages, in order to improve their customers shopping experience and maximise their conversions.

Better insights

Both the Magento Enterprise and Community Editions have been updated to support Universal Analytics – the new standard for Google Analytics. This will enable merchants to define bespoke metrics for tracking their users and website performance, as well as give them the means to incorporate both offline and mobile app interactions.

Swatches to increase product appeal

Another new feature that has been added to both the Enterprise and Community Editions is ‘swatches.’ This new feature allows merchants to optimise the presentation of their products by displaying product information e.g. colour, size and fabric as swatches. These swatches can be used on product info pages, category pages, as well as in layered navigation and search results. Their benefit is that they enable customers to quickly view a snapshot of useful product information to help increase their buyer confidence and boost sales.

Improved responsive design capabilities

The latest updates to Magento Enterprise and Community also benefit from a new responsive design reference theme and expanded feature set, which includes responsive emails. This new feature allows merchants to start selling their products on a mobile and tablet friendly website in half the time it would take them to commission and install a responsive web design theme.

Using responsive design not only ensures you offer a consistent user experience across all devices, but also allows you to save time and money on maintaining your website.

Build faster and more secure ecommerce websites

Using the latest edition of Magento Enterprise or Magento Community, you will benefit from being able to build and run faster and more secure ecommerce websites. Both editions have been updated to support MySQL 5.6 and PHP 5.5. MySQL 5.6 allows merchants to benefit from better performance and scalability, whilst reducing the memory usage on their database servers. PHP 5.5 is designed to increase the security of websites and will ensure merchants have continued access to Magento code updates.

Conclusion

All of the new features added to the latest releases of Magento Enterprise and Community have been designed to empower merchants and give them the opportunity to create better and even more unique shopping experiences for their customers, no matter what device they are using. By optimising product categories, speeding up websites and improving security, merchants are able to deliver improvements that should in turn lead to high conversion rates and greater customer retention.
