4 effective ideas on how to get rid of plagiarism

The internet has brought resources of all kinds, books, journal articles and essays on any topic, on the finger tips of all students. So, it has become quite easy to look up a topic on the internet, copy paste what you find and create a beautiful piece worthy of at least a B+. However, when the students are trying to outsmart professors, they forget that professors are one step ahead of them! To counter this problem of student submitting copy pasted content from the internet, now many universities have implemented plagiarism software through which each and every submission has to pass. If there is plagiarism in the paper, it is immediately detected and the student is severely punished.

If, as a student, you do not know how to get of plagiarism in your work or how to avoid it, here are 4 effective methods that will prove helpful. Read ahead!


Familiarize yourself with the types of plagiarism:

First, you have to know what exactly plagiarism means and what the types of plagiarism are, as the plagiarism software will also detect the slightest of plagiarisms in your paper, even if you haven’t copied the exact words.  So, be careful about all of these four types of plagiarism.

i. Direct plagiarism: taking someone else’s words or ideas and copying them verbatim and not giving them proper credit in the citation is referred to as direct plagiarism.

ii. Mosaic plagiarism: when you quote someone else’s work without using quotation marks or copying someone else’s work and replacing a few words with synonym while the content structure remains the same is referred to as mosaic plagiarism.

iii. Self plagiarism: Copying your own previous work and not citing it if it has published or submitted as an assignment before is called self plagiarism.

iv. Accidental plagiarism: when you forget to reference or reference in the wrong way, or paraphrase the original content without referencing, it is called accidental plagiarism.

Cite your sources in proper format:

Once you know what forms of plagiarism exist, you must learn to properly reference your work and cite all the resources you have used in your work to avoid being accused of plagiarism. Some professors ask references in a particular format, however, APA, MLA and Harvard format are widely used formats, so you can learn any one of them easily online. Rely only on the reputable sources:

Whenever you are looking for resources to cite in your assignment or research paper, make sure you use credible resources whose authors have solid credentials and who have been published in reputable journals. Never include blogs or newspaper articles in an academic paper.


Check online for plagiarism checker websites/ software:

When you have finished writing your paper, to make sure there is no plagiarism in your paper, you can look for online software websites and check your paper there. Many universities provide Turnitin access to students too, so you can easily check before submitting your paper that is it free of plagiarism or not.
