Wood Fences - Plenty Of Options
When it comes to building a new wood fence there are numerous options. These options include the actual wood you want to use, the height and the style. However, the main determing factor in what you new fence will look like and be built from is your budget. Let's take a look at some of your options.
Material - A wood fence could be made out of pretty much any type of wood you want. However, the most common options are going to be cedar, fir or pine. Cedar is the most recommended option because it comes with natural pest and rot resistance. The other options are usally pressure treated in order to resist rot and pests. Cedar is the more expensive option.
Height - Most wood fences are going to be between 3 to 6 feet. WIth the most common being 3 and 6 feet. However an eight foot fence could also be built if it meets building code and HOA standards. Getting into custom heights will cost more. If you wanted a four foot fence, the builder is going to need to use 6 foot board. In other words you are getting a 4 foot fence at the 6 foot price. And the reality is that it will cost more than the 6 foot price because each board will need to be cut increasing labor costs.
Style - There are numerous styles for wood fences. Scalloped, shadow box, good neighbor, privacy, picket, post and rail, rough cut post and rails, kentucky board fence and on and on. What we recommend to customers is to find pictures of fences they like using either PIntrest, or Houzz or a Goolge image search. That way we know excatly what is wanted and we can provide an accurate bid for the work.
Seal or Stain - Some home owners want their fence to be a certain color or they want to prevent the fence boards from weathering. Both of these things can be accomplished with stain or seal. The thing to keep in mind is that if you stain or seal the fence boards and you want them to stay that way. The fence boards will need to be stained or sealed every year or every other year.
Costs – The cost to build a wood fence is going to be determined heavily by the material you choose and the amount of labor that will be necessary to get it installed. A standard 6 foot, flat top, pressure treated pine fence is going to be much less expensive than a 6 foot, scalloped cedar fence. A wood fence installed on flat even ground will cost less than an installation on hilly, brush covered area.
