Using Best Non Stick Cookware Safely

Sep 22nd 2015 at 10:22 PM

Some people are hesitant to usenon stickpans for safety concerns but don’t fret—there are ways to use top-quality non-stick cookware properly. Non stick pans are best for quick-cooking foods that only need low to medium heat, from scrambled egg to pancakes. You can also use non-stick pans to warm up your leftovers. Indeed, there are far too many benefits of using non-stick cookware so you shouldn’t ban them from your kitchen completely. But how do you use non stick pans safely? Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Don’t heat it up too high. The key is to ensure that your pan does not heat up to 600ºF (315ºC) in less than 10 minutes. Also, do not preheat an emptynon stick pan. Even the world’s biggestnon-stick pan manufacturers (DuPont included) now advise against going above medium. Play it safe by setting the knob to low or medium, and ensure that you don't put your non-stick pans over power burners that is, anything beyond 12,000 BTUs (for gas stoves) or 2,400 watts (for electric ranges). These highheat burners should only be used for boiling large pots of water very quickly on non-Teflon materials.

2. Ventilate your cooking area. Turn the exhaust fan on while cooking to clear away fumes that may be produced by the non stick material.

3. Don't sear or broil meat on non-stick pans. These cooking tasks involve temperatures that are too high.

4. The heavier, the better. Heavier non stick pans heat up slower then lightweight cookware, making them worth the extra money.

5. Do not chip or damage your pan. Never useyour metal utensils on your nonstick pans. Though top quality non stick cookware is harder to chip because of the superior adhesion between the coating and the pan itself, you should still play it safe. Chipped or flaked pans are likelier to release potentially toxic compounds. Always use wooden or silicone utensils. Avoid stackingyour non-stick pans and if you have to, put paper towel liners between them.

6. Replace them after a few years. There is no consensus on how long to use your non stick cookware. It all depends on how often you use them. DuPont estimates that these pans should be replaced every three to five years based on an average usage, but some kitchen experts advise consumers to buy a new pan every two years or so. And if your pan gets damaged, throw it out.
