The history and significance of lighting
Lighting is a necessity in life. It’s hard to imagine a life without light. Artificial lighting is needed to dispel darkness. Till a few centuries ago, the lighting options available to mankind were limited. Only lamps were available for illumination. However, with the advent of electricity, everything changed. The electric bulb was discovered. As the decades passed, more improved and efficient forms of lighting such as fluorescent lights were introduced.
The history of lighting can be traced back to 70,000 BC. It was the time when humans started tentative explorations of artificial lighting. They started to use natural materials like hollow rock and moss soaked in animal fat for lighting. However, it was only in the last 6000 years that efficient lamps were introduced. Kerosene lamps, discovered in the 9th century, became the most widely used source of lighting all over the world.
In the past two centuries, the mankind has seen major improvements in lighting technology. Today, we have a wide variety of lighting products available in the market. Whether we talk of fluorescent lights or LEDs, many lighting products are available in the market that can be used for residential and commercial purposes.
