Solar Incentives in Connecticut
As the world becomes increasingly more conscious about the environment, states are beginning to offer incentives for homeowner who implement and use solar energy. Connecticut is not only the smallest state in the nation, but is also known as one of the wealthiest states when talking about per capita income. Solar incentives or subsidies in Connecticut are offered to business and home owners through utilities and by the state itself. Incentives for solar energy include things that help reduce the upfront cost of installing such a system. Almost half of the state of Connecticut receives at least four and a half hours of direct sunlight per day. In 2008, Connecticut was in the top ten of the fifty states when looking at solar capacity generation. Connecticut’s state laws also encourage using more renewable resources. For example, Connecticut’s renewable portfolio requires at least twenty-seven percent of electricity should be obtained through renewable resources by the year 2020.
The state offers a sales tax incentive that exempts certain renewable energy equipment from sales and use taxes. Connecticut’s Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CCEFIA) offers rebates for home and business owners based on the system’s performance over the first six years of use. In order to qualify for the rebates, however the contractor must be approved by the CCEFIA. Not only that, but the system must also have a CCEFIA Performance Data Provider approved monitoring system.
Any excess electricity used at the site of the owner’s home or business (or net excess generation) in any given monthly billing period is carried forward for one year. Each year, the costumers are reimbursed for any net excess generation from the previous year by the utility companies. Connecticut also has a wide range of solar financial assistance programs, related programs, and initiatives that vary in details from one program to the next.
If living in Connecticut, there are a lot of financial gains available for using Solar energy, and programs are in place to help take the bulk of the startup costs off the backs of potential buyers. The world is going green, and the greener it becomes the more incentives and initiatives toward having each individual do their part become available.
The most efficient way for home and business owners to switch to solar energy is by having solar panels installed. Solar panels are typically installed in the roof of the home and convert rays from the sun into usable energy that will not harm the environment. A professional should install the panels for various reasons. The first of which is because the panels are installed in the roof of the home, and using a professional decreases the risk of roof damage occurring. Another reason to use a professional is so that any questions or concerns about installing a solar panel system can be immediately addressed. There are professional Connecticut home solar installers within the state that would be more than happy to install a solar panel system and address questions and concerns the owner may have.
