How to easily and effectively keep your sinks clean

Jun 25th 2015 at 9:18 PM

A kitchen or bathroom sink usually looks beautiful and sparkly on the day it’s being installed. Since sinks are the work area of the house, their beauty can deteriorate really fast and even start to clog and smell. As such, you have to do all that is possible to keep the sinks in your home clean. The first sink maintenance tip is scrubbing. You would be wrong to think that your sinks are clean because you are always working in them with soap and water. Most of the soap that goes down the drain builds up in the sink basin and pipes as plaque. Add to this food particles, rust and water, and your sink will start to be a real mess. For this reason, you should scrub your kitchen sink with dish washing liquid and a sponge, after every few washes.

The second cleaning tip involves bringing sparkle to your porcelain sinks. This is especially useful for the bathroom, since most bathroom sinks are made of porcelain. To make your white porcelain sinks sparkle, lay down a layer of white paper towels in the sink and douse them in bleach. Remove them after 30 minutes and rinse the sink. This treatment is perfect only for white sinks. If your sinks are of another color, clean them with baking soda or vinegar to prevent the color from fading.

Third, your sinks will look better when they don’t have any stains or scratches. You can get beautiful discount kitchen sinks, but after installing them, take steps to keep them looking new. For instance, you can line the bottom of your sink with a perforated mat to prevent scratching. As well, rinse off any food items that are too acidic, such as fruits, wines and vinegar, as they could cause staining and etching. Also avoid using harsh cleaning products such as scouring powders and harsh scrubbers. Instead, only use dish washing detergent and a sponge.

Keeping your sink clean requires the right products. You can make use of products such as baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice, which are found at home and are not expensive. Baking soda for instance, is very useful for cleaning surfaces made of Corian. If your Corian surfaces have stains, mix baking soda in water to make a smooth paste and use it to rub off the stains with a scrubbing pad that is nonabrasive. Lemon juice is great for removing stains and you can use it for cleaning kitchen sinks and faucets. Mix some borax with lemon juice and using a sponge, apply to stains and rub. A mixture of borax and lemon juice works on different materials including porcelain and stainless steel. Vinegar, another great product in your pantry, is great for eliminating lime. Rub it on your faucets (apart from brass or colored faucets) and let it soak for a few minutes before washing off, and you will see a dramatic change.
