Honda Lawn Mowers – Have They Built The Fastest Ever?

Oct 14th 2014 at 3:46 AM

Earlier this year, Guinness World Records officially crowned one of Honda’s lawn mowers as the fastest in the world. Known as the Mean Mower, it boasts an impressive 109 horsepower and an average speed of 187.60 kilometres per hour; it smashed the previous record (of 141.34 kilometres per hour, set back in 2010) by almost 50 kilometres per hour! Whilst many will question why a mower needs to go so fast, you cannot deny that it is an impressive feat.

In order to qualify for the record, the Mean Mower needed to possess the ability to cut grass and had to look like a lawn mower. Honda has achieved both of these things successfully, although we have to admit that it is one of the flashiest looking machines we have ever seen! It was designed and built by Honda UK’s British Touring Car Championship partner, known as Team Dynamics, and is certainly not going to be a cheap investment for the standard homeowner.

Using a Honda HF2620 lawn tractor, the Mean Mower was re-engineered from the ground up with an all-new fabricated chassis and a 1000-cc engine (which came from a Honda VTR Firestorm motorcycle). The machine also features a custom paddle-shift six-speed gear system, Cobra sports seat, Scorpion exhaust system and a steering rack that was taken from a Morris Minor. It truly is an impressive machine to behold.

The record itself was undertaken with the same level of precision as any involving more conventional modes of transportation. Piers Ward, of Top Gear Magazine, made two runs through a speed trap set up at the IDIADA Proving Ground located in Tarragona, Spain. The runs occurred within an hour of each other, per Guinness regulations, and Guinness officials were on hand to observe. Those runs were then averaged together, resulting in the record.

Ellie Ostinelli, the PR Communications Manager for Honda UK, made this statement shortly after the record was made official – “The original brief for Mean Mower was to create the world’s fastest [mower] – and now it officially is, by some distance! We are all delighted to hold a Guinness World Records title and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in what has been a challenging yet incredibly exciting project.”

On top of the record-breaking speed of 187.60 kilometres per hour, this Honda lawn mower can also do 0 to 96 kilometres per hour in around 4 seconds. Honda representatives have also released statements saying that the Mean model is geared for speeds up to almost 210 kilometres per hour, so another attempt at breaking the record could be somewhere in the near future. At this stage, we are not sure whether any modifications will be made.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the Mean model is also a fully functional Honda lawn mower that is capable of cutting grass at speeds up to 24 kilometres per hour. This is twice as fast as a stock machine; imagine how much free time you would have with one of these models in your back shed? There has, however, been no word on when the Mean Mower will be available to the public (or if it ever will).
