Dry vs. Wet Carpet Cleaning

Mar 18th 2014 at 1:19 AM

You want to clean your carpet and are wondering what the best way of cleaning is? Generally speaking, there are two methods to make your beautiful home addition shiny again: this is dry and wet carpet cleaning. Both have advantages and disadvantages, which we are going to discus below. Read this article and choose the method that you consider the most appropriate and efficient for your carpet.

Dry Cleaning Method

What is it like?

The dry cleaning method uses a little moisture too, but it is in small amounts. One of the compounds used for cleaning is dry foam. It is extracted from a shampoo mixture, which barely wets the fabric. Another way is using absorbent compound. It is a powder that is designed to absorb odours, dirt and stains from the carpet. And the last method uses chemicals. It's called bonnet cleaning.

Benefits and drawbacks of this method

The best feature about dry cleaning is that the carpet dries as quickly as one hour or less. However, the process is said to be inefficient as it provides only a surface clean of the carpet. Hence, it is not capable of removing debris and dirt trapped deep inside the fabric.

Chemical cleaning

This method involves the use of dry shampoo, which contains chemicals that lift the dirt from the carpet instead of pushing it further down into the fibres. After that all the dirt is vacuumed or swept away. In fact this is not a completely dry method but it uses very small amounts of water, which allow the carpet to dry faster than if wet cleaning is used.

Wet Cleaning Method

What is it like?

Wet cleaning presupposes the use of water. The method is also known as hot water extraction or steam cleaning. There is also shampoo cleaning.

Benefits and drawbacks of this method

The pros of this method are that it eliminates all debris and dirt that have accumulated deep inside the fibres of the carpet. This is a form of a deep clean which ensures that the fabric is thoroughly cleaned. The method is quite aggressive bit it works great.

The cons of this method are that it takes time for the carpet to dry completely since wet cleaning uses huge amounts of water. Usually, the drying process may take 12 to 24 hours.

Steam cleaning

One of the best ways to obtain amazing results is using steam cleaning. It is claimed to remove nearly 97% of all the bacteria and dirt residing your carpet. It is efficient and tested.

There are specialised steam machines that spray hot water streams into the fibres of the carpet and lift the dirt. The water gets warmed into the machine. Depending on the type of steam machine, the water can be either boiling or cool. Once the dirt is lifted, a vacuum sweeps it away. If this is your way of cleaning the carpet, we recommend using truck-mounted machines. The difference between these and portable units is that the former are much more powerful. However, such systems are huge and heavy and only trained people can use them. Which is why you need to call a carpet cleaner to deal with the dirt in your carpet.

Shampoo cleaning

Now, as far as shampoo cleaning is concerned, a special machine is necessary. It will be used to spread the shampoo. For this purpose it needs to have a solution tank and nylon brush. A floor buffer is appropriate to use. However, it is important to mention that if you want to achieve fascinating results, you need to vacuum the carpet before you proceed to shampoo cleaning. Vacuum machines can lift dirt and debris from the fabric, whereas shampoo will only push it further into the fibres. Now load the tank with shampoo and plug the machine. It will start spinning. Release some shampoo on the floor and move the machine in circles. Then scrub. Be sure to cover the entire surface, moving from section to section, going in circles with the machine.

Next, use a hand brush to scrub the corners of the carpet. You are done.
