Art Therapy for Kids: Using Colorful Water Beads
Water beads are hydrating polymer which swell when soaked in water. They transform into gel-like consistency - bouncy, slippery and squishy. These colored beads are used as the base section of floral arrangements and decorative centerpieces.
Meant for use in decorative crafts, flower arrangements, gardening, soil substitute for plants, alternative way of watering plants, these colored water beads can also be used as a tool for children to learn sensory, color, creative art, and science. While these water absorbent beads are not designed for such purpose or for child's play, they do provide some educational benefits for the learning children. It is, however important that appropriate safety measures are in place when using these squishy beads as tools for some basic information for the kids.
The clear, transparent beads provide a lesson for the sense of touch. As these beads disappear in water, they are only found by touch. The transformation occurring from the time the beads are placed in water until they have fully expanded may be used as example to explain the concepts about water absorption, changes in shape, expansion, etc. Children also learn about the characteristics of the colored water beads - soft, smooth, slippery, gel-like, squishy and bouncy. Allowing the children to play with these materials when on a water table will teach them about what they feel when they touch them, encouraging children to identify simple emotions or feelings.
Aside from serving as a useful learning tool used in preschool, these multicolored beads can provide art therapy for young kids as well, whether they are in school or at home. While they play with the colorful and sparkling tiny balls, they get to learn about colors, basic shapes, color mixing, etc. - as they try to form the beads into their target shapes (if they do cooperate and stay in place). They can try to create as much art forms as they can think or imagine of. And it's the best way to introduce them to the primary and secondary colors.
By using the clear or transparent type of beads and washable watercolor paint, children can experiment if they can make the colorless beads turn into primary and secondary colors. Children will learn what colors come out with mixing two primary colors while having fun with the bouncy little things.
A lot of parents have discovered how these amazing beads can serve as art therapy for their children. The artistic and creative talents are developed and enhanced. Kids can get busy doing water beads artwork or rearranging the colors of the beads while the parents watch over them to make sure they do not eat these deliciously-looking crystal beads.
While they are non-toxic and environmentally safe, children should be taught that these are not edible foods. It is safe for children to play with them but they should be supervised at all times.
